Once your NVivo time-limited/trial Software period expires, you will no longer be able to open your project on the computer you installed the Software on unless you enter a new valid license key. The project is not lost when the license expires or is changed.

Your project data is external to the NVivo application and is stored in the Documents folder by default:

  • NVivo for Windows (.nvp) – e.g. MyProject.nvp
  • NVivo for Mac (.nvpx) – e.g. MyProject.nvpx

You will be able to access NVivo and then open the project if you decide to purchase a new license key. If you purchase the Software or obtain another license key, there is no need to uninstall and reinstall the Software on your computer. You can simply ‘replace’ the license with the new license key.

To replace your license if it has expired:

Open the Software and you will be presented with a screen where you can enter your valid license key.

To replace your license if it has not expired:

New NVivo

  1. Open NVivo
  2. Click on the File menu, Product InfoManage License and choose Replace License
  3. Copy and Paste your valid New NVivo license key

NVivo 12 Windows

  1. Open NVivo
  2. Click on the File tab, point to Help, Manage License and choose Replace License
  3. Copy and Paste your valid NVivo 12 license key

NVivo 11 for Windows, NVivo 10 for Windows

  1. Open NVivo
  2. Click on the File tab, point to Help and choose Extend License
  3. Copy and Paste your valid license key

NVivo for Mac

  1. Open NVivo
  2. Click NVivo in the toolbar, click Licensing and choose Extend License (If using NVivo 12 Mac, choose Replace License)
  3. Copy and Paste your valid license key

Once your license is extended/replaced, you can continue to use NVivo and open the project you were working on.

Hint: This applies only to the same versions of the Software. For example, you cannot extend an NVivo 11 (or earlier versions of NVivo) time-limited license using an NVivo 12 license key. Upgrading to a different version requires you to download the new version Software.
